Mental Health First Aid

According to the charity Mind, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England.  Each year, mental ill health is responsible for 72 million working days lost and costs £34.9 billion annually.

Employers have a legal duty of care to their employees. This includes providing a safe working environment and taking reasonable care to prevent mental or physical harm that may occur in the workplace. The Mental Health First Aid course will equip key team members with the knowledge and skills to support colleagues and the general public within the workplace.

Who is this course suitable for?

This two-day course qualifies candidates as their workplace’s Mental Health First Aider. It gives delegates the skills and confidence to have a non-judgmental conversation, recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health issues within the workplace and effectively guide a person towards the right mental health support.

Are there any entry requirements?

This course does not require any prior experience. Please be aware that this course focuses on employees in the workplace and covers subjects that some people may find distressing, including suicide and self-harm. If an attendee feels overwhelmed, they can leave the course anytime. Delegates must be 16 or over to attend this course.

What does Mental Health First Aid include?

Topics covered over the two-day course include:

  • What is mental health?
  • What is the difference between a mental health episode, crisis and condition?
  • What factors can affect our mental health?
  • The mental health continuum
  • Roles and responsibilities of a Mental health First Aider and Responder
  • Key attributes and behaviours of a Mental Health First Aider
  • Mental health action plan protocol (DR EFG)
  • How to support an individual (and their line manager) when returning to work after an absence due to poor mental health.
  • Physical first aid skills to be used in response to mental illness
  • How to carry out a risk assessment when supporting an individual
  • How to spot the difference between a medical emergency and an imminent threat to life (including how to identify which mental health conditions may be described as either) and what action to take
  • Recognising stress and how to support someone who may be experiencing stress
  • Recognising when someone is in crisis
  • Suicide continuum, risk factors, signs and symptoms
  • Recognising and understanding self-harm, eating disorders, PTSD & OCD
  • Psychosis - including delusions, thought disorder and hallucinations
  • Bipolar disorder
  • How to display empathy
  • Key skills to support an individual with poor mental health, including where to signpost them and how to have important wellbeing conversations
  • Overview of key legislation relevant to mental health
  • Exploring attitudes around mental health and how to create a positive culture in the workplace through influence and action planning

What are the learning outcomes for this course?

Delegates will gain an in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing, learn skills to create positive mental health culture within their workplace, as well as practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental illness, some physical first aid skills relevant to response to mental illness, the confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress & how to implement reasonable adjustments upon their return to work.

How is this course assessed?

All delegates must pass two multiple-choice question papers. Please note that the results are not given during the course. All delegates will receive a mental health first aid manual and workbook to support their learning.

How long is the course valid for?

Upon passing the course, delegates will receive a certificate which is valid for three years. There is no refresher course and they must complete the full course again to remain qualified.

Open courses are available on specific dates throughout the year. This course is ideal if you have one or two members of staff who require a specific course.

    This course is available via our trusted training partners, who offer this course at sites across the UK. Please contact us to discuss your needs.

Closed Courses

A closed course is available for your team only. If you have multiple team members who require training, this is logistically easier and cost-effective for upskilling your team.

  • On Site

    This course is delivered by a trainer on-site. If you don’t have a room suitable on your site for training, you may hire a local venue where we can deliver this training to your team members.

  • Stallard Kane Training Room, Gainsborough

    This course is available in our training room in Gainsborough and is suitable for businesses that do not have training facilities.

  • Virtual Course

    This course can be delivered exclusively to your team virtually via zoom.
