Winter can be a difficult time of the year for many: short daylight hours, cold weather and lingering financial pressures can affect your team’s morale.

We believe this is the perfect time to refocus on supporting your workforce in meaningful, impactful ways. We look at how businesses can go beyond the basics and make a genuine difference for their employees.

What can I do to make working in winter easier?

Winter can often mean a return to heavy workloads and tight deadlines, which can feel overwhelming after a long break.

What can I do to help lift the mood?

It’s tempting to offer generic ‘fun’ activities to distract employees from the winter blues. Instead of a one-size-fits-all solution, why not tailor activities to your team’s preferences? For example:

General energy levels seem really low, but how can I change that?

Mental wellbeing is often linked to physical energy levels. Providing small, actionable ways to help employees recharge can have a profound impact on their mood and productivity.

I’m meeting with my senior team: what should I tell them?

Leadership teams play a vital role in setting the tone; if employees see managers working excessive hours, skipping breaks or appearing overwhelmed, they may feel less able to prioritise their own wellbeing.

Is there any training or any procedures my business should have in place?

Employee wellbeing should be a year-round priority. Assess whether your business is encouraging a culture where employees feel supported in the long term.

Take action now to demonstrate your commitment to your team’s wellbeing.

Supporting neurodivergent employees is a crucial step toward fostering an inclusive and welcoming workplace where everyone feels valued and respected. Neurodiversity encompasses a range of conditions such as dyslexia, ADHD, autism, OCD, dyscalculia, and dyspraxia.

Katie Rees, Senior HR Advisor at Stallard Kane notes “Many individuals with neurodiverse conditions experience challenges on a daily basis, and in some cases, be classified as disabled. The Equality Act 2010 places a legal obligation on employers to protect neurodiverse employees from disadvantage and discrimination in the workplace.”

“This can be achieved by ensuring the correct support mechanisms and reasonable adjustments are in place to remove any barriers which prevent the individual from carrying out their duties.”

Each individual experiences these conditions differently, so understanding and accommodating their unique needs is essential to creating a positive and supportive work environment.

Here are ten ways to effectively support neurodivergent people in the workplace:

1. Implement Universal Adjustments and Accommodations

Not all employees will disclose their neurodiversity, and some may not even have a formal diagnosis. Many individuals are adept at masking their neurodivergent traits to fit in, which can be mentally exhausting. To ensure everyone is supported, it's crucial to establish workplace adjustments and accommodations universally. This could include flexible work hours, quiet spaces, or the option to use noise-cancelling headphones, regardless of whether someone has disclosed a specific need.

2. Ask Individuals What Support Looks Like for Them

Neurodivergent individuals have unique ways of managing their conditions. For example, one person might find certain fonts or colours difficult to read, while another may need to wear headphones to concentrate. Engage in open conversations with employees to understand their specific needs. Faye Bevington, Head of Risk Solutions at Stallard Kane states ‘As a neurodiverse individual and a senior manager, I still face challenges - like recently struggling with an external training module written in green text over images, which I couldn’t read. These small adjustments can make a significant difference.”

3. Provide Neurodiversity Training for All Staff

Faye continues “Awareness of neurodiversity in the workplace is essential, and robust business training is the first step towards greater understanding.” Training should cover what neurodiversity includes, such as dyslexia, ADHD, autism, OCD, dyscalculia, and dyspraxia. When everyone understands these conditions, it fosters a more supportive environment where neurodivergent employees feel understood and valued.

4. Tailor Communication to Individual Preferences

Effective communication is key to supporting neurodivergent employees. Some people may struggle with extracting crucial information from lengthy text documents, which can lead to stress and anxiety. Ask your employees how they prefer to receive information. For instance, highlighting or bolding important details in documents can help those who find large texts overwhelming.

5. Focus on the Strengths Neurodiversity Brings

Neurodivergent individuals bring unique strengths to the workplace. For example, people with dyslexia are often highly creative and excel at thinking in three dimensions. Those with autism might have an exceptional ability to focus on fine details for extended periods, and individuals with ADHD may channel their hyperfocus into driving new projects forward. By recognising and leveraging these strengths, employers can tap into a wellspring of innovation and productivity.

6. Utilise Assistive Technology

Assistive technology can be a game-changer for neurodivergent employees. Tools like mind-mapping software, speech-to-text programs, and even dual screens can significantly enhance productivity. Employers should stay informed about available technologies and explore funding options such as the UK government's Access to Work program, which provides support for employees with disabilities or health conditions.

7. Consider the Physical Environment

The physical workspace plays a crucial role in supporting neurodivergent employees. Open-plan offices can be overwhelming due to noise and lack of personal space. Consider using partitions to create more defined workspaces, provide adjustable lighting, and designate quiet zones where employees can work without distractions.

8. Create a Culture of Empathy and Understanding

Empathy is at the heart of supporting neurodivergent employees. Create a safe environment where people feel comfortable disclosing their needs without fear of judgement. Many neurodivergent individuals spend a significant amount of energy masking their behaviours to appear more neurotypical, which can be exhausting. For example, someone might repress their natural tendency to stim (self-stimulatory behaviour) in the office, leading to unnecessary stress. As an employer, fostering an environment where people don’t need to mask their true selves can lead to a more inclusive and happier workplace.

9. Hold Regular One-on-One Meetings

Regular one-on-one meetings provide an opportunity for employees to discuss any challenges they may be facing and to request additional support. These meetings also give managers a chance to check in on their well-being and to offer guidance or adjustments as needed. Being proactive in these conversations can prevent small issues from becoming larger problems.

10. Know How to Signpost to Additional Services

Sometimes, employees may need additional support beyond what can be provided in the workplace. Ensure that managers and HR teams are aware of external services and resources that can assist neurodivergent individuals. Whether it’s mental health support, career coaching, or specialised training, being able to direct employees to the right services shows a commitment to their overall well-being.

Supporting neurodivergent employees requires thoughtful consideration, empathy, and a proactive approach. By implementing these ten strategies, employers can create a more inclusive workplace that not only supports neurodivergent individuals but also leverages their unique strengths to benefit the entire organisation. The result is a diverse, dynamic, and innovative workforce where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Bonfire Night is a much-loved tradition in the UK, but it also brings safety challenges for employers. Whether your business is hosting an event or simply situated near public celebrations, guaranteeing the safety of employees, visitors, and property is vital.

From managing flammable materials to being prepared for common injuries, here are some essential workplace safety tips for employers this Bonfire Night.

Securing Flammable Liquids

One of the most crucial aspects of workplace safety on Bonfire Night is the proper storage and handling of flammable liquids. Under the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR), employers are legally required to assess and control the risks associated with dangerous substances in the workplace. On a night when fireworks and bonfires are everywhere, ensuring that flammable materials are securely stored away from potential ignition sources is essential.

Conducting a thorough DSEAR assessment can identify and lower risks, keeping both your workplace and nearby celebrations safe from accidental fires. If you haven’t undertaken a DSEAR assessment recently, now is the perfect time to review your processes to ensure compliance and safety.

Preventing Accidental Fires

Even if your business is not hosting a Bonfire Night event, accidental fires are a heightened risk. Fireworks landing in the wrong place, embers from nearby bonfires, or even a build-up of dry leaves around your property can all contribute to fire hazards.

Regularly clearing your premises of any potential flammable substances or items, such as dry debris or rubbish, and ensuring that all electrical equipment is turned off at the end of the workday are simple but effective preventive measures. Additionally, make sure your fire extinguishers are serviced and easy to access. This could make all the difference in preventing a small fire from becoming a large one.

Keeping Emergency Exits Clear

Emergency exits must remain clear, particularly during busy or high-risk events like Bonfire Night. Proper health and safety signage is crucial in ensuring that employees and visitors know evacuation routes and fire exits. Keep all exit routes are free from obstructions, such as storage items or decorations, and that your signage is clear, visible, and compliant with regulations.

Common Bonfire Night Injuries and How to Prevent Them

Bonfire Night can lead to several common injuries, most of which can be easily prevented with the right precautions:

Be First Aid Ready

Having trained first-aiders on-site can make a significant difference in the event of an injury. Investing in first aid training for your staff ensures they can handle common injuries like burns, cuts, and eye trauma. It’s essential that your first aid kits are fully stocked and easily accessible, particularly during busy events.

Stallard Kane is here to help.

Bonfire Night brings its share of fun and excitement but poses potential hazards for workplaces. By being prepared, you can protect your employees, visitors, and business from harm while still enjoying a safe and successful Bonfire Night.

Stallard Kane offers a fully integrated solution to support businesses in Health and safety, HR and employment Law, Risk Solutions, and Training. Our departments work seamlessly together to provide a one-stop shop for all your compliance and risk management needs.

Securing the safety of workers in environments where respiratory hazards are present is a legal and moral responsibility. A face fit test is mandatory if you wear a mask that requires a tight seal.

This test confirms that the Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) fits correctly and protects against harmful substances. This test safeguards your health and ensures compliance with safety regulations, keeping you and your workplace secure and safe.

Do I need a test?

If you wear a mask that requires a seal, you require a face fit test.

This could be in asbestos removal, welding, concrete cutting, paint spraying and any activity where a risk assessment stated that RPE (Respiratory Protective Equipment) is required. If you have identified RPE as one of your control measures, you are legally required to ensure face fit testing is carried out on the users of the masks.

Alongside the legal obligations, there are also moral obligations to the person’s health.

What happens at a Face Fit Test?

You will be met by a member of our team who is qualified in Fit2Fit Accredited RPE Face Fit testing. Our team members will go through the day’s process and gather information from you.

You will then undertake a sensitivity test without a mask, where a hood will be placed over your head, and a nebuliser will be used to spray a sensitivity solution into the mask until you can taste it. You will then remove the hood.

You will then be asked to wait for 30 mins until you have cleansed your palette. During these 30 mins, you will not be able to eat, drink or smoke OR VAPE  with the exception of plain, still water.

After 30 minutes, you will be shown how to fit the seal on your face mask correctly, the hood will be placed back over your head, and the test will be repeated. The test will last approximately 7 mins, and you will be asked to do several exercises during the test.

You will then be asked to remove the hood.

Find out more information about Face Fit Testing in this short video by https://bit.ly/3JIDebt

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need to bring all PPE you wear for your role. This includes items you wear alongside your RPE, including a hard hat, glasses, goggles, overhead ear defenders etc.

How long will it take?

You will be required to be nil by mouth except plain, still water for two hours before the test, so we recommend you do not eat or drink for at least two hours before arriving for your appointment. The testing, if successful, will last for one hour per mask.

Please note: If your face fit testing fails, the process must begin again. So please confirm with your employer that the test may last over two hours.

Once you have completed your face fit test, we will send you a two-year reminder to ensure you keep up to date with testing.

I would like testing for my entire team?

For larger groups and testing at your premises, contact our training team at training@skaltd.co.uk to discuss your booking.

When it comes to workplace safety, having trained first aiders can make a significant difference in your ability to ensure the wellbeing of your employees and customers.

Accidents and medical emergencies can happen at any time; having individuals trained in first aid skills can provide vital immediate assistance while waiting for professional medical help to arrive.

How Many First Aiders Do You Need?

How many first aiders you need in your place of work depends on the level of risk involved. We recommend conducting a risk assessment, which will identify the recommended number. Our Health & Safety team can support your business with this; you can contact them at healthandsafety@skaltd.co.uk

Do my team need any prior qualifications to do Emergency First Aid at Work?

No; one of the advantages of the Emergency First Aid at Work course is that it has no formal entry requirements. As long as participants are physically able to participate in the practical activities required (such as administering CPR) they are able to complete the course.

What will the course prepare them for?

The course contains crucial areas of emergency response. Your team will learn how to act safely and effectively in emergencies, administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), treat an unconscious casualty, manage wounds and bleeding, address shock and choking incidents, tend to minor injuries, utilise first aid equipment and maintain proper record-keeping.

The aim of this training is to provide a well-rounded understanding of the emergency first aider's role and build skills and confidence.

How will my team be assessed?

Practical assessment is a crucial part of the Emergency First Aid at Work course, so there is no hiding at the back of the class.  Participants will be evaluated through a combination of theory and practical activities and in a short assessment at the end of the day.

It is recommended that participants wear suitable clothing and footwear for the course to maximise engagement and performance.

How long will they be qualified for?

An Emergency First Aid at Work certificate is valid for three years; after that, you will need to sit a one-day refresher. If you have team members whose certification is due for renewal, please contact Naomi at naomi@skaltd.co.uk, and we can arrange for those team members to attend a refresher course.

What study options does Stallard Kane provide?

Emergency First Aid at Work is available as an open course, held on specific dates throughout the year, and is ideal for individuals or small groups. The next course at our Gainsborough venue is on Wednesday 12th June. If this does not suit you, we can also offer courses located at a venue closer to your business.

If you are looking for a study option exclusively for your team, closed courses are available for groups. These provide a cost-effective and convenient solution for upskilling your entire staff, perfect for larger workforces. This can be delivered on your site, at a rented local venue or at our head office training venue in Gainsborough.

They are key to keeping up with health and safety regulations, but which of these similar-sounding qualifications is right for your staff?

What are the names short for?

SMSTS stands for Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS), and SSSTS stands for Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme.

Are they officially accredited qualifications?

Both SMSTS and SSSTS are accredited by the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board). This means that your site managers and supervisors will gain a recognised qualification that meets the required standards for their positions on site.

What’s included in the courses?

The key aim is to ensure that candidates are safety-conscious and effective in their roles, while also providing them with the relevant tools and knowledge to actively make their working environments safer for everyone. Topics include:

Are there options for delivery?

We offer these courses via our Training Partnerships across the UK using multiple methods of delivery, so there’s always going to be something right for you and your business.

SMSTS Site Managers Safety Training Scheme

For site managers, there are two options:

Both options can also be done online as a virtual course, so your staff can attend from the workplace or home. For full course details visit ourtraining page

SSSTS Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme

Supervisors complete a two-day course, which is done on consecutive days at one of the many training venues across the country, or can be done online from the workplace or home. For full course details visit our training page.

How long do the qualifications last?

Both qualifications are valid for five years.

Is refresher training available?

Absolutely. The refresher for the SSSTS is 1 day, and the SMSTS is 2 days; providing these are completed before the current qualification expires, the qualification remains valid. There is also an online option for refresher training.

Key figures for Great Britain in 2022/23 show that 1.8 million working people are suffering from work-related illnesses, out of which 875,000 workers are experiencing work-related stress, depression, or anxiety. These mental health issues account for 50% of all work-related illnesses. Taking proactive steps to look after your wellbeing and that of your team can lead to improved performance, reduced sick days and presenteeism, better colleague relationships, and a generally happier workforce.

What exactly is stress?

‌Stress is defined as ‘a state of mental or emotional strain resulting from an adverse or demanding circumstance’ and is the body’s natural reaction to feeling threatened or under pressure. In small doses, it can be useful and motivational; however, too much stress or prolonged exposure to stress can affect your wellbeing and eventually cause burnout. Importantly, it should never be seen as a weakness; everybody experiences stress differently, and has their own tolerance level.

What causes stress?

‌Stress is generally caused when we feel we don’t have the resources to handle the challenges in front of us; this means that even positive life events can be stressful, leaving us feeling lost and out of control. The good news is that once the situation passes, so do the feelings of stress. Typical causes of stress include:

What about workplace stress?

Stress within your team may lead to increased staff turnover, decreased performance, increased sickness or absence and poor performance. Common workplace stressors include:

What are the main signs of stress?

Stress affects people in different ways; this graphic gives some examples of how it may show itself. You may experience many of these symptoms, or just a couple; remember, it might even take someone else commenting on them for you to realise you are displaying them at all.

That sounds familiar. How can I manage my stress levels?

‌Every person is an individual and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution; however, these are good starting points:

Giving your body the right nutrients allows it to function properly and repair itself as well as providing you with fuel for your day. Chasing a sugar or caffeine high may provide a temporary boost but is always followed by a corresponding low, and can build unhelpful habits; similarly, alcohol and nicotine are toxins for your body, giving it more to deal with. One simple improvement is to drink more water - a hydrated body is a happy body.

Did you know that the chemicals your brain releases during sleep are the same ones which prevent it releasing the stress hormone? The better your sleep quality, the less you will feel affected by stress.

Exercise releases endorphins, the body’s natural mood-enhancer; it can also improve your sleep (see above).

Meditation, yoga, deep breathing and mindfulness can all reduce stress, bringing your attention to your body, slowing your breathing and lowering your heart rate.

When you next feel stressed, take a moment to notice what caused it, how you tend to respond and what you could do to handle it.

Prioritise time to do things you enjoy: read a book, listen to music, watch a movie, catch up with friends. Learn to feel comfortable saying no to things you don’t want to do; self-care isn’t being selfish.‌

One of the simplest but most effective things you can do is talk about it; the old saying ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’ is absolutely true in this case. Talking to someone - a friend, family member or a colleague - reinforces the fact that you are not alone and also helps you make sense of your feelings as you explain them. Also, they might have been through something similar and have useful advice or insights for you.

While life is usually stressful to some extent and at certain times, if you feel it is becoming unmanageable then talk to your GP or another healthcare professional.‌

How can I support my employees?

Stress within your team may lead to increased staff turnover, decreased performance and increased absences. Being able to recognise the signs of stress in your employees will allow you to act promptly; having a trained Wellbeing team within your business, made up of both mental health first aiders and wellbeing champions, will enable you to provide support to your employees so that fewer people reach crisis point.

Mental Health First Aiders

Having Mental Health First Aiders within your business would provide an alternative outlet for your staff to express their issues to someone who may not be their direct line manager – this often puts staff at ease when discussing sensitive matters.

The two-day course covers many mental health issues that may become apparent in the workplace. It focuses on how to deal with someone at a crisis point, how to communicate with them, and how to signpost them to local and national support agencies.

Wellbeing Champions

This one-day course trains employees to be workplace wellbeing advocates. Participants gain the knowledge and practical tools to promote mental, physical, social, and financial wellbeing while driving engagement.
