Do you know how to provide effective support to autistic team members in the workplace?
We spoke to Emma Warner, Learning and Development Sales Specialist at Towergate, about our new course Leading Autistic Colleagues aimed at providing line managers with a greater understanding of the workplace challenges faced by neurodiverse staff, and what can be done to help them.
Could you share with us how the idea for the Leading Autistic Colleagues training course originated?
During my time as an induction trainer I met many people and inevitably there were a number with neurodiverse conditions. I realised that, as a function, we had no training or support available to be able to help these people succeed, thrive and feel included within the workplace.
Who do you feel would benefit from attending this course?
It sounds cliché, but absolutely everybody! Even if you think you know what having autism might entail, I can safely say the conversations we have on the courses will give you different viewpoints and definitely some food for thought.
What can participants expect to gain from attending the Leading Autistic Colleagues training?
An insight into how somebody with autism may think and feel, and what work and life challenges they may face in day-to-day life.
What topics will be covered during the session?
What autism is, what the daily challenges can be, how many people in society it affects, what we can all do support them and how we can be more aware of our colleagues.
Are there any entry requirements for participants?
Line managing somebody is the only requirement here, so you can learn how to support your staff in an inclusive way. Other than that, nothing! Even if you think you know about autism, there is always something new to learn.
Can you share any positive stories from previous participants who attended this training?
I have heard of several changes in businesses as a result of the training, including the introduction of ‘no questions asked’ social event opt-outs, the provision of fidget toys and improved inter-colleague relationships due to a broader knowledge and understanding.
How do you ensure the session is interactive for participants?
The sessions are discussion-based with interactive videos, discussions, and games. The more people put into the sessions, the more people get out of them, so participation is very actively encouraged!
Are there any plans to expand or enhance the Leading Autistic Colleagues training in the future?
There is always more work to be done in the Neurodiverse space, as it is such a broad subject with endless amounts of facts, figures, and research. Feedback from the sessions is always taken into consideration to make sure our offerings are factually correct and up to date. The more people that attend these sessions, the more work we will be able to do to create sessions on different neurodiverse conditions.
If you could summarise the course in one sentence, what would it be?
An important piece of training that will open your eyes and your mind to the differing levels of obstacles that autistic people face in the workplace.
Enhance your awareness of autism and learn how you can support your team to success with our new training course Leading Autistic Colleagues. Mental ill health affects approximately one in four people in the UK. Yet, many employees still feel unable to approach their manager to discuss their mental health - and many managers feel ill-equipped to offer advice and assistance.
We look at the relevant legislation, common risk factors and what you can do to mitigate them and ensure you are acting lawfully.
What is mental health?
Mental illness is, simply, just that - an illness. Like any other illness, it could be a direct result of an employee’s working environment, or have occurred independently but potentially affect their health, safety, and wellbeing at work. Stress, anxiety and depression are all examples of mental ill health.
What are the most common risk factors?
Common stressors or triggers (i.e. situations or events that cause stress and can bring on or worsen symptoms) for employees include:
Demands at work.
Struggling to cope with the demands of their job, particularly during busy periods.
Lack of control.
Feeling that they have no say in how they work on a day-to-day basis or a lack of communication and engagement during organisational change.
Lack of support.
Not being given sufficient information, training or support from managers and colleagues, or being subjected to unacceptable behaviour such as harassment or bullying.
What can I do to minimise risks to mental health in the workplace?
Both physical and mental ill health may impact a person’s performance and wellbeing at work. Risks to mental health, like any other health risks that affect employees, can be managed and minimised with risk assessments, safe working procedures and reasonable adjustments in place.
One of the most important steps business owners and senior management can take to support mental ill health in the workplace is to lead by example, proactively considering their employees’ mental health and creating an environment which encourages open discussion and acceptance.
Understand mental health
Educate yourself and your senior staff on the most common conditions, current legislation and relevant industry guidance. Ensure you can identify likely stressors in your workplace and early signs of mental health concerns so that you can provide support.
Make mental health a priority in your workplace with a course tailored to equip line managers with tools to lead crucial conversations.
Our Line Managers Master Class for Mental Health course will give your line managers the tools and confidence to conduct those crucial conversations around Mental Health, strengthening your business's well-being provision.
Appoint a Mental Health First Aider
A trained mental health first aider will be able to spot the signs and symptoms of any potential concerns and provide relevant advice and support. Employees may also feel more comfortable discussing any issues with a first aider than with their manager.
Understand how mental ill health might affect your business.
Issues associated with mental ill health can have a significant impact on your business, including:
- High staff turnover
- Absenteeism
- Presenteeism (coming into work when unwell)
- Conflict
- Poor employee engagement
- Low productivity
- A higher number of errors and accidents
Update your policies and procedures.
- Consider whether your business needs a stress management strategy in place; it can be useful to have a list of identified mental health triggers and any reasonable adjustments that could be put in place.
- An ethics or grievance procedure helpline may ensure that unacceptable behaviour is reported and investigated at the earliest opportunity.
- Ensure a process is in place for those returning to work to provide the support they need.
Create and maintain a positive working environment.
- Ensure decision-making is fair, inclusive and transparent.
- Promote staff wellbeing through training, seminars and workshops; consider an employee care management programme and encourage disclosure and openness.
- Lead by example; walk around your office at lunchtime to see how many of your staff are still at their desks and encourage them to take a proper break. Similarly, when you leave work, tell your staff it is time they went home (if you are always the last out, perhaps you should look at your own working hours!).
When does a mental health issue count as a disability?
The Equality Act 2010 defines disability as having a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term (i.e. lasting 12 months or more) adverse effect on your ability to do normal daily activities. There are additional rules for recurring health issues, such as depression.
How can I ensure I treat people equally according to the law?
Review your recruitment process.
Make sure that you are complying with legislation throughout the whole process, including pre-employment questionnaires and interviews; remember, you are not permitted to use questionnaires to ask about health issues before offering someone a job except in very specific circumstances. The law covers employees through recruitment, employment and if they are dismissed for any reason, including redundancy.
Examine your actions.
As an employer, it is against the law to treat one employee less favourably than another because they have a disability, you believe they have a disability or because of an association with a disability - for example, if they are the prime carer of a disabled person.
Make reasonable adjustments.
You are required by law to make reasonable adjustments to work practices, and provide aids/adjustments, for disabled employees. What is considered as “reasonable” is subjective and entirely dependent on the specific circumstances of the employer and the employee.

If you think of training as something you need to complete but will probably never use, think again. First Aid at Work is a practical, hands-on course where you will learn skills that could save a life – at work, or at home.
First Aid at Work trains candidates to become qualified first aiders who can apply learned techniques on a casualty in the vital moments before the emergency services arrive. It is suitable for those who work in potentially hazardous environments, for example construction sites or kitchens.
First Aid at Work will teach you not just CPR and how to use a defibrillator, but how to deal with burns and scalds, choking, allergic reactions, spinal or head injuries and many other life-threatening conditions and injuries. The course also highlights often-overlooked areas such as talking to casualties and keeping them calm as well as how to manage an emergency.
With three days of highly interactive practical and theory work you’ll have the confidence to approach situations both in and out of the workplace and stay cool, calm and collected under pressure.
Do I need to do the full three-day course?
Not necessarily. Every workplace environment and individual is different – and so are their first aid needs. Our Emergency First Aid at Work is a one-day course designed to give participants the confidence and ability to take life-saving action during an emergency and is designed for those with specific responsibility to provide first aid in a low-hazard environment such as an office or those working in a community or voluntary role.
We also have specialist courses, such as Paediatric First Aid, available; talk to our team for more details.
There are no formal entry requirements, but candidates must be physically able to participate in all practical activities during these courses.
Talk to us; our team will help you choose the right course to ensure you’re getting the comprehensive learning you need.
What about mental health and wellbeing?
According to the charity Mind, every year 1 in 4 people in England will suffer a mental health problem of some kind; mental ill health is responsible for 72 million lost working days a year, costing £34.9 billion. Employers have a legal duty of care to their employees. This includes providing a safe working environment and taking reasonable care to prevent any harm, mental or physical, that may occur in the workplace.
Our two-day Mental Health First Aid course qualifies candidates as their workplace’s mental health first aider. Delegates will gain an in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing, learn how to create a positive mental health culture within their workplace, and how to spot the triggers and signs of mental illness. They will also learn some physical first aid skills relevant to response to mental illness, how best to reassure and support a person in distress, and how to implement reasonable adjustments upon their return to work.
Wellbeing Champion courses also train employees to be wellbeing advocates in the workplace. This will give them the knowledge and practical tools to promote mental, physical, social and financial wellbeing whilst driving engagement and building a positive workplace culture.
Training options range from individual attendance at an open course held across the UK to experienced trainers delivering closed courses for your staff, either on site at your premises, at a suitable local venue or at our training room in Gainsborough. In addition, the Mental Health First Aid and Wellbeing courses can be delivered remotely via Zoom.
We’re confident we have a solution that suits your needs; talk to us today about your requirements.
We are always keen to get client feedback on everything we do, to ensure we are continually moving forward; this is from one of our recent Emergency First Aid at Work courses:
'Just a quick note to say thank you for sending such an amazing trainer for today’s Emergency First Aid Training. The interaction in the training room was incredible! I received really positive feedback from each attendee after completing the course, particularly on how well the course materials were delivered.'
