Bonfire Night is a much-loved tradition across the UK, but it also brings safety challenges for employers. Whether your business is hosting a celebration or located near public events, keeping employees, visitors, and property safe should be your top priority.
From managing flammable materials to preparing for potential injuries, here are some practical workplace safety tips to help you stay compliant and reduce risk this Bonfire Night.
Every business must have a current Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) under fire safety law. This should consider both internal and external factors such as the location of bins, storage areas, and any potential ignition sources near the building.
Take time to review your FRA before Bonfire Night to ensure it remains suitable and sufficient. If you have recently changed your layout, processes, or introduced new materials, these must be factored in.
Even if your business is not hosting a Bonfire Night event, the risk of fire increases during this time. Fireworks landing nearby, sparks from bonfires, or a build-up of dry leaves can all create hazards.
Keep your site tidy by removing rubbish, dry debris, and flammable waste. Avoid storing pallets, bins, or other combustible materials against external walls or near entrances. Ensure all electrical equipment is turned off at the end of the working day and confirm that your fire extinguishers are serviced, accessible, and appropriate for your premises.
Emergency exits and escape routes must remain unobstructed at all times. Check that exit routes, corridors, and external pathways are free from storage or decorations and that all fire exit signage is visible and compliant. Make sure your team knows evacuation routes and procedures in case of an emergency.
Eye injuries: Sparks and debris can easily cause harm. Provide suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as safety goggles, for employees working outdoors or in exposed areas.
Burns: Handling fireworks or working near open flames increases burn risks. Make sure your team includes trained first aiders who can respond confidently and effectively.
Sprains and fractures: Wet or uneven ground and poor lighting can lead to slips, trips, and falls. Conduct a short event-specific risk assessment to check surfaces and lighting around your site before celebrations begin.
Having trained first aiders on site can make all the difference in an emergency. Check that your first aid kits are fully stocked and that First Aid at Work certificates are up to date.
Our Training team delivers accredited First Aid and Fire Safety courses, helping businesses prepare their people for every situation with confidence.
Bonfire Night should be enjoyable and safe. By planning ahead and reviewing your safety arrangements, you can protect your people, your property, and your reputation.
